When people talk about the challenges facing Tasmania, the conversation often centres around statistics. Mental health, social isolation, school attendance, family stress and cost of living pressures are all important issues, and they help us understand the scale of what many people are facing.

But statistics only tell part of the story.

Behind every number is a person. A young person trying to find where they fit. A parent carrying concerns they rarely speak about. A family navigating a difficult season. A volunteer looking for a way to contribute and make a difference.

And behind many of these challenges sits something that can be difficult to measure but impossible to ignore: connection.

Over the years, one thing has become increasingly clear to us. People are not designed to do life alone. Young people need trusted adults in their lives. Families need supportive communities around them. Schools need people who can walk alongside students through both the ordinary and difficult moments of life. Communities need places where people feel known, valued and connected.

These things are not optional extras. They are some of the foundations that healthy communities are built upon.

That is why Devonport Chaplaincy exists.

For more than twenty years, we have sought to be present where life happens. In schools, community organisations, churches, neighbourhoods and local gathering places. We have learned that while circumstances differ, many people are looking for the same things: someone to listen, someone to encourage them and someone who genuinely cares.

The reality is that most lives are not changed through a single event. More often, change happens through relationships built over time. Trust develops. Confidence grows. People begin to believe they can move forward. Hope returns.

Every day our chaplains, mentors and volunteers have conversations that will never appear in a report or make a headline. A student opens up about something they have been carrying for months. A young person begins to see possibilities they could not previously see. A family discovers they do not have to face challenges alone. A volunteer finds purpose through investing in others.

These moments may seem small, but they often become turning points in people’s lives.

We live in a world that often celebrates scale, speed and efficiency. Yet some of the most important things in life still happen slowly. Trust takes time. Belonging takes time. Confidence takes time. Resilience takes time. Hope takes time.

These things grow through relationships.

That is why we continue to believe so strongly in chaplaincy, mentoring and community connection. Because while programs matter, relationships are what create lasting change. When we invest in people, we strengthen communities. When communities become stronger, everyone benefits.

This vision continues to drive everything we do. Not simply delivering services, but helping build a Tasmania where Care is practical, Community is genuine and Hope is real.

Because in the end, the things that hold communities together are often the simplest things of all: people choosing to walk alongside one another, to care, to encourage and to remain present through life’s challenges.

And perhaps now more than ever, Tasmania needs more of that.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Support the Solstice Swim

This year, a group of us will once again take part in the Solstice Swim on the shortest day of the year.

While jumping into freezing water may not sound particularly appealing, it provides a great opportunity to support work that is making a real difference in communities across Tasmania.

Funds raised will help support chaplaincy, mentoring and community wellbeing initiatives that create lasting impact through relationships.

The strongest communities are not built by institutions alone.

They are built by people who care for one another.

People who give their time.

People who invest in others.

People who choose to show up.

Thank you for helping us continue that work.

Together, we’re helping build a Tasmania where more people experience Care, Community and Hope.
