As Christmas approaches, we reflect on a truth that underpins everything we do at Devonport Chaplaincy: relationships, community, and connection are the foundation of meaningful impact.
Throughout the year, we’ve witnessed how even the smallest actions—a kind word to a student, a moment of support for a struggling family, or the presence of a chaplain in a time of need—can lead to extraordinary outcomes. These small, consistent efforts form the building blocks for the long-term change we strive for in Devonport and beyond.
This Christmas, we’re embracing a renewed focus on our core mission: supporting young people and families through our school and community chaplaincy work.
A New Approach to Christmas
For many years, Christmas hampers have been a cherished part of outreach programmes like those run by Loaves and Fishes Tasmania. While Devonport Chaplaincy does not directly provide these hampers, we recognise their impact and are grateful for the support they bring to the community.
Loaves and Fishes Tasmania is taking a new approach this year, focusing on supporting Christmas lunches to bring people together and combat social isolation. This initiative aligns with our shared values of fostering connection and building stronger communities.
Meanwhile, Devonport Chaplaincy continues to work at the heart of our community, providing emotional, social, and spiritual support to young people and families. This includes:
- School Chaplaincy: Offering care and guidance to students navigating life’s challenges.
- Family Support: Helping parents and caregivers find hope and resources in difficult times.
- Community Connection: Working alongside local organisations to strengthen the fabric of our community.
Supporting Young People and Families
Our work is grounded in the belief that small, faithful acts can transform lives. Whether it’s a chaplain’s listening ear, a mentoring conversation, or practical support in a crisis, these moments have a ripple effect, spreading hope and resilience throughout our community.
As we look to the future, we’re excited to expand our focus in 2025 on building resilience in communities through our chaplaincy work. A key part of this vision is ensuring that young people from vulnerable backgrounds can flourish, whether in their education or as they transition into the workforce. Exciting initiatives are being added to our mentoring and chaplaincy programmes next year, designed to support young people well and make life better, one relationship at a time.
This Christmas, we’re committed to being present for those who need us most. While others may focus on physical needs like food, our role is to nurture the emotional and spiritual well-being of Devonport’s young people and families.
The Power of Small Acts
From the tiniest seed grows the mightiest tree. This timeless truth reminds us that small, faithful acts—when nurtured with care—can lead to profound change.
As the Bible says in Luke 16:10: “Whoever is faithful in very little is also faithful in much.”
Whether it’s a word of encouragement, a moment of connection, or a relationship strengthened, these small acts lay the foundation for something far greater. By nurturing these moments, we are helping to build a stronger, more connected Devonport.
A Challenge for Christmas
As we celebrate this season of giving, we invite you to join us in focusing on the moments that truly matter:
- Be present. Take time to connect deeply with someone in your life or community.
- Be generous. A small act of kindness can make a lasting difference.
- Be committed. Long-term change comes from consistent care for the people and communities around us.
At Devonport Chaplaincy, we believe that when we nurture small, meaningful moments, the impact can grow beyond what we can imagine. As the saying goes, “Out of little things, big things grow.”
Thank You
To our community partners, schools, and supporters: thank you for being part of this journey. Your collaboration and dedication have helped us provide support, guidance, and hope to countless young people and families. Together, we are meeting immediate needs while building the foundation for a brighter future.
From all of us at Devonport Chaplaincy, we wish you a joyful and meaningful Christmas season filled with connection, gratitude, and hope. Here’s to working together in 2025 to serve the small and build communities where everyone can flourish.
With gratitude and best wishes,
Andrew and the Devonport Chaplaincy Team
