Devonport Church of Christ swim team, the Polar Bears, have set their sights on being the biggest fundraisers in this year’s Winter Solstice Splash in support of Devonport Chaplaincy.
Splashers will take to the cool waters at Mersey Bluff at 8am on Saturday, June 22, to raise money for school breakfast programs, learner-driver and student mentoring, school chaplains and mental health first aid training.
The Polar Bears have fielded teams in each of the past two years, raising over $5000 in both 2022 and 2023.
Pastor Blake Moore said he hoped to raise at least $5000 again this year from a team of 30 to 50 splashers.
He has challenged other churches to organise teams.
“Devonport Chaplaincy does an amazing job caring for children, youth and families through their various programs,” Pastor Blake said.
“Being cold for a few minutes is a small price to pay to ensure the work continues.
“Also, there is a great vibe on the day as people get together and take the plunge.
“Our numbers were down a little last year as I had a hip operation and was unable to take part, so we lost a little bit of momentum.
“But we will be back this year, bigger and better.”
