What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis (eg, the person is suicidal or has had a traumatic experience). Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

Mental Health First Aid strategies are taught in evidence-based training courses authored by Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Australia and delivered by accredited MHFA instructors across the country. Devonport Chaplaincy offers  MHFA courses as authored by MHFA Australia, delivered by instructors who are currently accredited by MHFA Australia.

Mental Health First Aid. Educating for a Better Tomorrow

Course’s are based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.

Engaging the whole community

Our goal is to see the entire community appropriately educated on the what, why and who of mental illnesses and ensure that they have the skills and keys to provide assistance whatever the circumstances.

Acceptance and understanding

While we may not be able to eradicate mental illness, educating the community with key steps and guidelines will create acceptance, support and empathy for both those suffering the condition and those living with someone with a diagnosed disorder.

Better Relationships

When a community has a greater understanding of mental illness verses mental wellness it creates and/or improves all forms of relationships whether they be personal or professional.

Enhanced outcomes

Participants are more likely to identify friends, family members, colleagues, or students who are displaying early signs of mental illness, assist, and encourage them to seek appropriate professional help.

Empowering the community

Empowerment by providing the community with a trained facilitator who will educate and offer a conducive learning environment to put new skills and knowledge to work through role-playing and activities.

Better understanding of Mental Health vs Mental Illness

Both the Youth and Teen Mental Health First Aid Courses provide the participant with a clear understanding of the mental health continuum and an array of mental health illnesses as well as how to support those affected by it.
